From its inception to its closing ceremonies, the Fair promoted one of the last great metanarratives of the Machine Age: the unqualified belief in science and technology as a means to economic prosperity and personal freedom. Wedged between the greatest economic disaster in America and the growing international tension that would result in World War II, The World of Tomorrow was a much-needed antidote to the depression and confusion of the times. Windows 39: Intergrated Entertainment System |
![]() |
1939 is the year known for when World War II started, but it was not a very hard time. As can be seen from the theme of the World Fair 'Building The World of Tomorrow', people were interested in new technology and had hopes for the future. At the same time, people enjoyed many kinds of entertainment, such as film, radio, and television in everyday life. On the other hand, people paid a lot of attention to the news because of the unstable political situation due to WWII. Therefore, in 'windows 39', I focused on the daily news and entertainment and designed an online TV style newspaper. It is an integrated entertainment system. The top page is delivered everyday and people can access only the contents on the top page. The starting sound is the beginning part of the big band's tune 'The Dipsy Doodle' and it suggests that the system is for entertainment. The system has some feedback functions that encourage users to answer the questions from the programs and write their opinion for 'windows 39', because these approachs to media were becoming popular at that time. |
